Once again we’re hosting the our Great Pumpkin Challenge with the weigh in of giant pumpkins taking place on our Pumpkin Day on Saturday, September 28! The giant pumpkin seeds have arrived and you can now pick up yours in store.
Dill’s Atlantic Giant Pumpkin
Developed by Howard Dill in Nova Scotia, the Atlantic Giant is one of the worlds largest pumpkin varieties. This giant pumpkin has won numerous world titles for largest pumpkin, often weighing in excess of 450 kg which equates to about 1000 lbs! Even under normal conditions in the average home garden, this monster pumpkin variety is still capable of outstanding performance!
How to Grow Pumpkins
Pumpkins are a hot weather crop that needs full sun and deep, rich, well drained organic soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. Before planting, work lots of compost into you soil. Sow you seeds directly outside from late May through early June once danger of frost is past. Plant 1″ deep about 8′ apart. Seeds can be started indoors 3 weeks before the plant out date. They do not transplant well, so it’s recommended to use paper of fibre pots that can be set directly into the soil.
